MIC COMMUNITY LIFE AND CELEBRATIONS

A Religious Community is a place where conse-crated men or women live together to share life in love and more importantly to be witnesses of the gospel (Vita Consecrata no. 42). The life of a consecrated person is expressed in a Religious Community through the profession of the evangeli-cal counsels of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience.

PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL INSTITUTE

WHO IS SAINT MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT

Marcellin Champagnat was born at Le Rosey, a hamlet near St. Etienne in France, on 20th May, 1789. This was a fateful year because it was the year in which the French Revolution began. Marcellin grew up on a small farm where he lived with his parents, Mary and Jean Baptist, his 4 brothers, 4 sisters and aunt. As soon as he became of age he was sent to school.

MIC-A CENTRE OF WORSHIP

Praising God is contagious, especially for those of us who like to be affect-ed by him echoed Shelena Griffiths. Entering the Marist chapel on a Sunday morning for the first time, one would think it is one of the biggest parishes within Nairobi, it is really mesmerizing seeing how religious men and women as well as the lay faithful come to discover the presence of God.

GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION

On Sunday 27th October 2019, the entire community of Marist International Centre (MIC) celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Religious life of Br. Spiridion NDANGA. The celebration began with Holy Mass at 10:00 am in the MIC Chapel. The mass was attended by many religious men and women in and around Karen, staff, lay people and students of MIUC and the Rwandan community in Nairobi.

Charles was one of the 22 Ugandan martyrs who converted to Christianity. Though he was baptized the night before being put to death, he became a moral leader. He was the chief of the royal pages and was considered the strongest athlete of the court. He was also known as ‘‘the most handsome man of the Kingdom of the Uganda.’’ He instructed his friends in the Catholic Faith and he personally baptized boy pages. He inspired and encouraged his companions to remain chaste and faithful. He protected his companions, ages 13-30, from the immoral acts and homosexual demands of the Bagandan ruler, Mwanga. Mwanga was a superstitious pagan king who originally was tolerant of Catholicism? However, his chief assistant, Kitikiro, slowly convinced him that Christians were a threat to his rule.

The premise was if these Christians would not bow to him, nor make sacrifice to their pagan god, nor pillage, massacre, nor make war, what would happen if his whole kingdom converted to Catholicism? When Charles was sentenced to death, he seemed very peaceful, one might even say, cheerful. He was to be executed by being burnt to death. While the pyre was being prepared, he asked to be untied so that he could arrange the sticks. He then lay down upon them. When the executioner said that Charles would be burned slowly to death, Charles replied by saying that he was very glad to be dying for the True Faith. He made no cry of pain but just twisted and moaned, ‘Katanda! (O my God).’’ He was burned to death by Mwanga’s or der on June 3, 1886. Pope Paul VI canonized Charles Lwanga and his companions on June 22, 1964.
